Thanks for the input, Michael. Your analysis seems to be right on target.

My misunderstanding of this could have caused me a lot of trouble. 
Fortunately, I was saved by the fact that it seems that sprintf also 
automatically appends a terminating null character. In fact, it appears that 
sprintf fills any unassigned trailing character bytes with terminating null 
characters. So, it all worked out for me despite my ignorance.
